As the saying goes it’s better to be a jack of all trades than a master of one. This 1996 Nissan Primera seems to embody the phrase. Offered with a mere 80k verified and documented miles, this sporty, safe, and efficient sedan seems to do everything well. Finished in Silver Metallic (KL0) the body is in good shape aside from some minor dings, chips, and scuffs associated with normal use. This recently serviced, SR-powered five-seater is a unique and fun take on a JDM four-door that would make for a wonderful year-round ride or weekend cruiser.
The cabin is nicely appointed and full of power equipment. The view of the road ahead is clear and the dash is in good nick, lacking any cracking or distortion. The driver receives an adjustable steering column and SRS airbag, which was uncommon at the time. Power equipment includes functional electric locks, power-power folding mirrors, and power windows that all work as advertised. A simple to use automatic climate control system is standard and currently blows cold A/C. The gauges are all easy to read and the glovebox even has the factory owner’s manual. Cabin upgrades include a set of aluminum pedals and a RAZO shift knob. The multicolored seats are in an above-average shape and are still soft to the touch. They are comfortable on long drives and lack any major rips stains or tears and are highly stylized. The door cards, carpets, and headliner all look good as well and have resisted major wear over the past 25 years. That’s not to say everything is perfect as the audio quality isn’t great but then again it’s an older Carrozzeria system and not something brand new. Still, at a quarter-century-old, it’s impressive how well this old girl was cared for. On another positive note, even the OEM mats are still in the truck and in above average shape!
Conveniently the Primera was sold alongside a version of the car stateside, the Infiniti G20. Our example is fresh off an oil and filter service and starts up promptly thanks to a new 12v battery we installed. The SR20DE idles confidently and breaths a bit freer thanks to a polished Apex’i catback exhaust. It sounds a bit throatier to boot, and sets off the rear end with its subtle spoiler! The 2.0L is connected to a five-speed manual gearbox that shifts just as it should. The close-ratio unit is great around town and geared properly for sustained highway cruising. Power is sent to the front wheels which makes this sedan an ideal year-round cruiser. The adjustable suspension is firm but not stiff enough that you can’t daily drive. The brakes perform above average and this lightweight four-door slows down pretty darn quickly when required. The 16×7 Rays S-05 Eurostar alloys complete the aesthetic and are all wrapped in new all-season rubber. The new tires will last for tens of thousands of miles to come and quiet down the ride nicely.
