We at Japanese Classics have a love for all sorts of quirky Japanese styles and different genres of modified vehicles. From mild to wild, and Kei cars to busses, we love them all and have built them all! Our wide array of imports include this 1990 Hino Rainbow 22 seater bus. Legalized and modified to use to haul the team at Japanese Classics to and from shows, this is as unique as it gets! It’s alright if you didn’t know modified busses were a huge thing in Japan? Well, now you do! There are even a few great Instagram pages dedicated to them if you need a rabbit hole to wander down. The modifications to this bus are fairly minimal but have had a massive overall impact. Originally this bus left the Hino factory in white, however has been resprayed a brilliant black with gold flake. We also added the livery styled after many of the modified busses in Japan, which is removable if you’d prefer a different look or to add your company name to it. Additionally, the rear bumper is completely one-off and the factory tail lights were shaved and relocated to the bumper. Nine Dekotora LED taillights were added, and have incorporated turn signals in the center sections. Finally, a set of Alcoa forged aluminum wheels complete the look of this unique and cool piece of Japanese culture.
The interior is likely the best part of the bus. While the driver has all of the controls easily within reach, the passengers have several seating options including sofa-style rear seating around a table that includes drink holders. There’s also an onboard coffee maker although we never used it and do not know if it is functional any longer. The curtains scream Japan and add additional privacy when needed. One of the best interior features is the mini chandeliers in between the windows, which do function properly with the flip of a switch located beside the driver. There are endless possibilities to use this bus for and it was really good to us over our years of ownership. Both A/C units function properly and blow nice and cold A/C along with piping hot heat. Also included is a functioning PA system that can also plug into your phone for some tunes while you are cruising in style.
This rig is powered by Hino’s notoriously reliable H07D 7.6L diesel engine paired with a manual 6-speed transmission. Offered with a mere 45k verfied and documented miles, its only just now getting broken in! The engine turns over quickly when prompted and settles into a confident idle. This bus cruises along comfortably at highway speeds and the long-wheelbase is great for high-speed stability. It shifts seamlessly and puts busses with those automatics to shame in the quarter-mile. We’ve had this bus serviced at our local Hino dealer since we purchased it and have installed brand new airbags we purchased from Hino Japan. While it could now use a set of new shocks it is otherwise in excellent mechanical condition. The tires are nearly new too. This bus has successfully carried us all the way to Miami and back with no issues whatsoever. No matter what you want to use it for, one thing is for sure, this Hino bus will do it in the most authentic Japanese way possible!
