JDM Land Cruisers are amongst the most rugged and determined SUVs out there. Unlike the American market, which only received one version of the truck, Japan has a few tasty choices. This 1996 Prado is just as good off-road as it is on the tarmac. Finished in a classy Silver over Gray Two-tone (K02) the body is in good shape aside from some scuffs, chips, and dings associated with normal use. The appearance has been updated with a pricey set of Weds Keeler alloys, and the factory rainguards and OEM spare tire cover add a dash of flair. Recently serviced, this turbo diesel rig offers a spacious and safe seven-seat cabin packed with power amenities. Legally imported and ready to rock this practical, reliable, and unique Land Cruiser is a bonafide Japanese Classic hauler.
The prior generation Prado was produced for nearly two decades prior to our KZJ95. Unlike its predecessor, this one has a cabin more akin to a cushy sedan than a glorified tractor. All kidding aside, this TX model is equipped with standard dual SRS airbags and power windows, locks, and folding mirrors. The latter all work as advertised and the driver also receives an adjustable steering column and a field monitor which displays altitude, the direction of travel, and the temperature. Directly below that unit is a Kenwood headunit and automatic climate system. Both work well and the A/C blows cold for these last remaining hot days of 2021. The seats, of which there are seven, are in above-average condition. The multicolored cloth is soft to the touch and lacks any major rips stains or tears. The third row even folds away conveniently for improved storage options. The headliner, door cards, and carpet are all in good shape and it’s apparent this car was cared for in a prior life. It even includes the factory owners’ manuals which are still sitting in the glovebox.
The chassis and suspension were reworked for this model year, and the larger body and longer wheelbase offer superior on-road performance. The engine is also a brute and this Prado is powered by the legendary 1KZ-TE. The 3.0L is fresh off an oil and filter service and starts up promptly thanks to a new 12v battery. It is a little torque monster frankly, and although the miles are unknown due to a prior cluster swap, it pulls strong off the line and provides all the power you’ll need. The four-banger is connected to a slick-shifting automatic transmission. The turbo diesel breathes better thanks to a new engine air filter we installed here in our shop and a set of new serpentine belts ensures you’ll have all the engine-driven accessories at hand. The full-time 4WD system that underpins this TX allows for year-round sure-footedness. The ride is above average compared to what you’d expect from SUVs from this era. This rig is really well built and you can tell when you’re behind the wheel. The standard ABS brakes are confident and the power steering is predictable and on point. The Weds Keeler alloys complete the package and are all wrapped in new all-terrain rubber at all four corners. They quiet the ride down nicely and should last for tens of thousands of miles to come.
