The latest legal Land Cruiser is here in the form of this 1996 J90 Prado. More refined on-road than its predecessor, this torquey turbo diesel three-door model is unique, capable, and reliable. Offered with a mere 150k verified and documented miles, this 4WD is finished in a classic Deep Jewel Green over Gray Metallic two-tone (K11). Complimented by a set of OEM rainguards, the body is in good shape other than some minor scuffs and dings associated with normal use. Boasting an upgraded interior with more safety features, this medium-duty SUV would make for a killer weekend crawler or daily driven SUV.
The cabin is a massive improvement over the prior generation. You’d expect that, but this one includes some impressive power options and safety equipment. The view of the road ahead is clear and commanding as this tall ute rides far above traffic. For the first time ever a Prado was equipped with dual SRS airbags and offers passengers more protection in the event of an accident. The dash lacks any discoloration or cracking and is simply laid out. An analog clock and an Elipse touchscreen double din headunit catch the eye and look upscale. Both do work and the audio quality is decent overall. Power folding mirrors are great to have in the confines of tight city parking and the electric windows and locks work as well. Privacy tint helps to keep interior temps down in the summer and the automatic climate control blows cold A/C. The rear windows can even be pushed out for additional natural ventilation on comfortable days. The seats and door cards are upholstered in a soft, gray cloth with several blue and purple colorful accents. They lack any major imperfections such as rips, stains or tears and jazz up the interior styling. Long drives can be had in comfort and this RX Prado lacks any pronounced squeaks or rattles, like a modern SUV. The head and shoulder room is massive and the front and rear occupants have dedicated cupholders. The carpets and headliner have withstood any major damage over the years and the OEM mats are included in the sale of this Land Cruiser. That’s not to say the cabin is perfect as the front cupholders have some damage and the cloth accent on the driver side door card is slightly pulled up on the bottom edge.
Mechanically there are plenty of improvements over the vehicle it replaced. The legendary 1KZ-TE is now intercooled for an additional 15 ponies. We have replaced the engine air filter to keep her breathing freely and the engine sounds fantastic. Fresh off an oil and filter service the 3.0L starts up quickly and sets into a confident idle. We have replaced the 12v battery to ensure she fires up stress-free for the next few years to come and delivers proper amperage even if the dead of winter. The massive four-banger is connected to a full-time 4WD system that gives this three-door its year-round sure-footedness. A locking center differential is available if you get mired in the back forty, as is low gearing, but most folks will never need to engage it. The automatic gearbox shifts seamlessly and acceleration is brisk, especially for a truck of this size. The new suspension design is as brilliant on-road as it is off the beaten path. The independent front handles the tarmac fantastic, and the Prado can deal with the rigors of daily use without breaking a sweat. The power steering is light and the brakes feel confident. The silver three-spoke alloys have all been wrapped in new all-terrain rubber at all four corners. These will last for tens of thousands of miles to come and will lend plenty of year-round grip when needed.
