Subaru’s are typically known for their rally-inspired Impreza WRX, but the brand also produced some underrated sporty designs. The Legacy wagon also offers a punchy boxer motor, spacious cabin design, and symmetrical all-wheel drive but with a more refined ride. This 1996 is even more special because it is a GT-B model, which handled better and supplied the driver with 30 more ponies over the standard trim. Finished in Light Silver Metallic (406) the paint is good overall, and this chassis is offered with a mere 26K verified and documented miles. The body does have a few minor dings, chips, and scuffs to note and is set off by a pair of understated, one-piece OEM rainguards. Recently serviced and legally imported, this spacious five-seat estate is a sporty, practical, reliable turn-key Japanese Classic.
The cabin design is spacious, to say the least. You can comfortably seat five folks with plenty of leg and headroom to spare. The interior is true to its original form with the exception of the Kenwood Audio that replaced the original radio. This modern upgrade compliments the cabin and sounds decent. If tunes aren’t your thing, the boxer rumble is nearly as good! The dash is clear of any cracking or UV damage which can be a concern on some vehicles we come across. This wagon is optioned with power amenities such as electric windows, locks, power heated mirrors with one-touch folding capability that all function. If you want the windows up, the digital climate control is easy to use and blows cold A/C, and the heat absolutely blasts in time for winter. The seats are fitted in a soft light gray cloth that lacks any rips, tears, or stains. The matching door cards look equally good. An adjustable steering column and factory Momo steering wheel give you the ability to find optimal comfort behind the wheel. The headliner is showing no sagging or stains and the carpets lack any major blemishes. It is clear that this wagon was taken care of in its previous life overseas for the next owner.
This well-known powertrain is sought out by Subaru enthusiasts and this GT-B wagon is special. The heart of this gem is the 2.0L EJ20R twin-turbo boxer engine mated to an automatic transmission. With a turn of the key, this GT-B fires quickly up thanks to the new 12V battery. Upon inspection by our trained technicians, we did replace the alternator as it was not working as it should. The power band is linear and the acceleration is responsive to the driver’s needs. Four new tires were installed to help keep the power on the road and give the next owner some year-round peace of mind. The GT-B comes equipped with the beefy Bilstein suspension which makes this model stand out from its competition. The suspension is forgiving on bumps and potholes and the ride is comfy for simple commutes or long drives. The brakes respond on demand and easily slow this wagon down on a dime when you need it. Fresh off an oil and filter service, you are good-to go until the next recommended service in 3k miles. Whether on a trip with the family, a daily commuter, or even a fun sleeper project, this Legacy GT-B is an amazing platform to own and would make for a unique and fun Japanese Classic.
