The Hilux Surf was sold as the 4Runner here in the US and is a plug-and-play import if you will. When you own one of these, especially a 3.0L gasoline-powered one, it is essentially the same as the SUV sold stateside. This 1994 example is offered with a mere 99k verified miles and finished in a stately (8E3) Aztec Blue Pearl. The body is in good shape aside from some normal dings and scuffs and would show well at a Cars and Coffee, for instance. With plenty of room for five, and a capable 4WD system. these second-generation Surfs make for wonderful year-round vehicles that are highly collectible, reliable, and useful.
The cabin is in better shape than most 25-year-old SUVs, and frankly, it’s nicer than the average Hilux. It’s evident the car was cared for in Japan, and it’s better equipped than the average Surf as well. The functional power-retractable sunroof and factory cruise are the two most noticeable upgrades. For even more ventilation a power rear window allows for an additional breeze. Other standard power features include working electric windows, locks, and mirrors. The driver gets an adjustable steering column and the view of the road ahead is commanding and clear. The dash is in good shape and lacks any cracking or distortion as is common with these models. The seats are trimmed in a gray and blue cloth. They are soft to the touch, durable, and lack any major imperfections such as rips, holes, or tears except for the seam splitting open the driver’s front seat bottom. The bolstering is such that long cruises can be had in comfort and the rear seats fold forward to create a pseudo sleeping area or plenty of room for additional cargo. The OEM audio still works as it should, and the truck even includes an automatic climate control system. The a/c blows cold currently making this a decent road trip car for Summer. Even the cruise control is still working which makes for seamless commuting.
The 3VZ V6 engine was sold here in the states for years and is easy to work on and find parts for. The 3.0L 3VZ powers this truck and is fresh off an oil and filter service and received a new engine air filter as well. Ignition occurs quickly and the SUV also has a brand new 12v battery that should last for at least four more years. Our trained techs have additionally replaced both the intake manifold gasket and the valve cover gaskets to keep this thing running like a top. The powerplant is connected to an automatic gearbox. The trans shifts as it should, and lacks any clunking or hesitation. Hilux models also came standard with a selective transfer case that includes high and low range 4WD. For efficiency, you can select 2WD unless the weather refuses to cooperate. The suspension is compliant for daily use and can handle all the potholes and speedbumps you can throw at it. The brakes are confident and the power steering helps city parking and overall maneuverability. The alloys are all wrapped in brand new all-season rubber at all four corners, and even a brand new spare tire adds a tough look mounted outback.
